About the Hobby of Coin Collecting
Coin
collecting is a hobby which
consists of collecting coins or legally minted currency.
Coin collections can range from something as simple as a
collection assembled from pocket change to spending
decades assembling rare and valuable coins from dealers
and auctions. There are many different coin collecting
themes that have become popular.
Date and Mint Mark
Collections
Coin collections
can be assembled by making complete collections of a
series by date and mint mark. For example, a collector
can try to attain one coin from each year and each mint
for the Washington Quarter series. Depending on the
series this might be a very difficult task. Some shorter
coin series include Susan B. Anthony Dollars and
Eisenhower Dollars. The longest running series is the
Lincoln Cent coin. A popular coin to collect by series is
the new State
Quarters coins.
Country Collections
Another popular
method for collecting can be to create country
collections. A hobbyist can try to attain one coin from
each country of the world. This can be a daunting task
since there are so many countries. The collector can
sometimes find ways of trading coins with collectors in
other countries.
Type Collections
Coins can be
collected by type for a single country. This consists of
attaining a coin from each separate coin series for one
country. This would include each separate series for each
denomination. This is another challenging way of
collecting coins since there can literally be hundreds of
different types of coins during a country's
history.
Investment Collections
Coins may be
collected for the purposes of investing. In this case
coins acquired will typically be rare or valuable coins
or coins in very high grades. They will often be
certified, graded, and encapsulated by a third party
grading service. The leading third party grading services
are NGC and PCGS.
